City of Fremantle’s West End precinct has become the largest single place to be permanently included in the Western Australian Register of Heritage Places, with four properties receiving State Government grants.
Heritage Minister David Templeman announced that the four Fremantle properties were among 23 heritage places to share in $1.22 million in funding through the 2017-18 Heritage Council of WA grants program.
Acting Fremantle Mayor, Ingrid Waltham said the grants show the value of having the precinct heritage listed.
“The City of Fremantle nominated the West End for inclusion on the State Register and worked very closely with the State Heritage Office and property owners for more than a year to make it happen.
“To be eligible for Heritage Council grants, buildings must be heritage listed, so the listing of the entire West End – which includes around 250 buildings – means there are a lot more opportunities for property owners to access government funding.
“Because these grants have to be matched by property owners dollar-for-dollar there will be a lot of investment happening in Fremantle’s West End, which is very pleasing.
“The heritage listing has resulted in some great outcomes for the community, for the City, for property owners and for our unique and valuable built heritage,” she said.
