Mornington Peninsula Shire, Victoria, has installed closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras along the Rye shopping precinct and foreshore using a $200,000 grant from the Federal Government’s Safer Communities Fund.
This new system complements the existing CCTV system which was originally installed by the local Rye businesses and traders over the last two years taking advantage of the 50 percent Council rebate administered by the recently formed Rye Beach Business Association.
The cameras capture footage in known ‘hot-spots’ and transmit it back to the Rosebud Police Station.
The footage will be used for live monitoring in high activity periods or to review if reports are made of anti-social or criminal behaviour.
Mayor, Bryan Payne said the community had shown a desire for CCTV systems to help improve the safety of the townships.
“To ensure we are meeting their needs the Shire will continue to work with the State and Federal Governments on programs like this to create safer communities and we thank the Federal Government for their contribution to the Community of Rye.”
Councillor Hugh Fraser said that the new security system was going to make a difference to the local community.
“CCTV is also beneficial for Victoria Police in assisting them with fighting crime and will help residents to feel safe”.
