Douglas Shire Council, Queensland, have launched a new website to share information about a strategy to guard the region’s coastline from the impacts of climate change.
The Resilient Coast website provides regular updates about the Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy (CHAS) project, which aims to help plan for areas impacted by erosion and storm tide inundation.
Strong scientific evidence suggests that sea levels will continue to rise and coastal lows and cyclones will become more intense in Douglas Shire.
Mayor Julia Leu said the development of CHAS will be based on the best available information and be a transparent process involving Douglas Communities.
“We have a world-renowned coastline that is adored by locals and tourists.
“It is crucial that we take these projections seriously and start thinking about what we can do to prepare for significant changes to our coastline.
The CHAS is largely funded by the Queensland Government and Local Government Association of Queensland under the QCoast2100 Program.
