The Shire of Esperance, Western Australia, and the Esperance Tjaltjraak Native Title Corporation Ranger team have embarked on a joint project.
Funded by Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage’s ‘Protecting Heritage Sites’ program and with assistance from South Coast Natural Resource Management through the ‘National Landcare’ project, upgrades have been made at the Alexander Bay campground to protect sensitive environmental and cultural sites.
The 12 person Tjaltjraak Ranger team have been working alongside the Shire’s Environmental Officers and South Coast NRM’s Coastal Works team to fence the day-use area at Alexander Bay.
Over the last few years’campers have been damaging more and more of the paperbark swamp.
Shire staff and visitors to the area have been impressed with Tjaltjraak ranger’s enthusiasm to learn new skills, work ethic and quality of their workmanship.
A strong working partnership has been formed that will be beneficial for many future projects.
The new Ranger team have learned fencing and tree planting skills which they plan to use at other sites.
Future projects will include upgrades in the surrounding Alexander Bay campground planned for the 2018/2019 financial year.
Other works planned at the site will include a new toilet block, track upgrades, camp-bay improvements, new picnic shelters and tables, and a tree planting day with the Condingup Primary School students in term three.
