Drones fly Council into the future

Graduating staff eager for take off.

Ballina Shire Council, New South Wales (NSW), is flying high since six staff now have their ‘wings’ after graduating with their Remote Pilot License from TAFE NSW.

Manager Information Services, Stewart Littleford, said, “Drone technology is rapidly evolving and embracing this new technology and its advantages will save Council thousands of dollars each year.”

Earlier this year, Council jumped on board the drone revolution, purchasing a DJI Phantom 3 and enrolling specific staff in TAFE NSW’s new innovative course.

“We continue to discover new applications and uses for drones. This new technology will improve efficiencies and the safety of our staff.”

The innovative drone training covered meteorology, safe flying practices, aerodynamics, navigation, legislation and gave students practical hands-on training with a range of drone technologies.

Thanks to this training, the team of ‘pilots’ can now safely and confidently operate Council’s new DJI Phantom 3 drone.

Council plans to use the technology for a variety of tasks including inspections, surveys, sport field management, marketing, assessments, aerial photography, audits and 3D modelling.

Council’s ‘pilots’ are now set for takeoff and it appears the limits are endless.
