The beauty of turning old into new*

The Eltham Leisure Centre, Victoria, was constructed in 1981 and while the gym and sporting buildings have undergone some upgrades since being built, the aquatic section had not.

The deteriorated condition of the aquatic area and plant meant it needed an upgrade.

Peddle Thorp design director, Peter Brook, said the old building no longer met the needs of the Nillumbik community.

The design for the refurbished centre now provides a shire wide benefit and caters for all age groups.

It now features a warm water pool and will respond to the needs of its ageing population.

Mr Brook said the Eltham Leisure Centre was now connected to the natural environment and it was a fantastic aquatic complex.

“We have helped balance environmental, social and economic considerations to leave a legacy for future generations.”

The centre was opened in September 2018 and is now one of the proudest achievements for Peddle Thorp, which has a long history of building state of the art aquatic centres.

Nillumbik Mayor, Karen Egan, said the pool complex was impressive.

“This massive project has already seen the most patronised community leisure centre in the Shire become even more popular.

“At its busiest, the centre has been used by around 700,000 people each year, and early indications are it is set to attract even more.”

“It’s aesthetically beautiful as well as being totally inclusive.

“There are ramps to all the pools with an aquatic wheelchair and hoist also available.

“The centre also has Nillumbik’s first Changing Places with a full sized change table and hoist to meet the needs of people with severe disabilities.”

The centre offers:

  • a 25m, eight-lane indoor heated pool with ramp access
  • a warm water program pool with ramp access
  • a leisure pool with toddler zone
  • a outdoor water splash pool
  • a spa with ramp access
  • a sauna and steam room
  • a accessible change rooms
  • a multi-purpose program room
  • a poolside seating and
  • a new equipment and improved car parking.

The centre will cater for learn-to-swim classes, fun days, school holiday programs and for recreational and lap swimmers. The heated pools can be used all year round.

The ramps mean those with limited mobility and in wheelchairs will be able to access the water.
