‘Smart park’ made even smarter

Taking the kids down the park to play is one of life’s simple pleasures…but sometimes you need to stay connected while you’re down there.

With that in mind, the City of Joondalup, Western Australia, has installed its first ‘smart bench’ at Tom Simpson Park in Mullaloo.

The Steora smart bench allows park users to charge their devices while overlooking the playground at the northern end of the park.

Certain to be a hit with both parents and carers who enjoy the park; the smart bench is sleek and modern in its design and has integrated solar panels allowing different types of devices to be charged from it.

The bench comes with two USB ports for charging any type of device using a USB cable and wireless charging is also available for compatible devices by simply placing the device on the charging pad.  A wi-fi connection is possible, however this function has not yet been activated.

With more than 15 sensors inside the Steora bench, it can monitor everything that happens on and around it. Every second, sensors gather data about air parameters, bench usage and its system status. All information gathered can then be accessed via a dashboard.

Mayor, Albert Jacob, said, “The City is really excited about this new ‘smart bench’ technology.

“Tom Simpson Park is a great location to test such technology given its popularity and the young family demographic.”

The City of Joondalup is located about 25 minutes north of the Perth CBD and is a progressive and ambitious local government, driven by a vision it shares with its community as a bold, creative and prosperous City that is internationally recognised.

Across 22 suburbs, Joondalup has a population of approx. 161,000 with natural assets including 17km of stunning coastline, biodiversity-rich natural areas, hundreds of family-friendly parks and world-class wetlands.
