The Blue Tree project — which began in Mukinbudin in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt has seen dead trees throughout the state painted blue, encouraging people to talk about mental health.
Given the project its own twist, East Pilbara Shire will be covering a tree with hand-stitched blue yarn for Mental Health Week this October.
The Blue Tree project allows communities, families and the Shire to come together for this important cause.
Shire President, Lynne Craigie, who was a practicing psychologist for more than 20 years, is passionate about this project and wants everyone involved in the campaign.
“We are asking for your help, to give a tree a ‘blue’ lease on life by knitting or crocheting blue squares to cover one of the trees outside the Newman Shire offices.
“We want to bring awareness to suicide prevention and get people talking about what we can do to support each other and prevent mental health problems in our region.
The Shire has issued a call to arms asking everyone to start knitting or crocheting or contributing in other ways to the cause by donating blue yarn or wool.
Knitting and crochet sessions are being planned where people can come together, learn a new skill, meet new friends
and have a ‘yarn’.
