New men’s shed opened

Broadford Men’s Shed has officially opened its new shed which will offer men throughout Mitchell Shire the chance to come together and socialise, build on trade skills and provide quality programs for the community.

Mitchell Shire Council assisted in managing the construction of this facility with the Victorian Government contributing $60,000 through the Department of Human and Health Services Men’s Shed Program.

Mayor, Bill Chisholm, said, “Men’s sheds are crucial for men in rural areas like Broadford and Mitchell Shire. Some members of the community can become isolated because of where we are so the Broadford Men’s Shed decided to address this concern.”

The new facility will cater for an increase in membership, participation from schools and community groups and will be located centrally in the Broadford Community precinct.

The old facility was housed in a small garage with only ten members and had no capacity to expand.

The new multi-purpose, all-abilities space aims to bring men from all walks of life together.

The Broadford Men’s Shed identified the need for a facility where men can participate and enjoy each other’s company all the while reducing concerns and social isolation.

While bringing people together, the shed will strengthen connections and understanding between cultures and generations alike.

“Schools and other youth outreach organisations have tried to enter students and younger men to the Men’s Shed, but the old space could not host them safely.

“However, thanks to this wonderful upgrade, these kinds of young people can enjoy the facilities.”

The Mayor thanked the Victorian Government for its funding and support.
