Training solid gold volunteers

Town of Port Hedland, Western Australia, has been awarded Gold in the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Volunteer Employer Recognition Awards, in recognition of its dedication and support of fire and emergency service volunteers.

The Town was nominated by Port Hedland State Emergency Services (SES) member, Town Ranger and Emergency Services Advisor Keith Squibb, and Hedland Bush Fire Brigade member and Town Staff member Geoffrey Chick.

Across Western Australia, organisations release staff to protect and repair communities impacted by fires, severe storms, cyclones, floods, earthquakes and other disasters.

Town of Port Hedland supports its emergency service volunteers through an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement, whereby volunteers are not disadvantaged when attending emergencies during business hours.

Hon. Commissioner, Fred Riebeling, said, “Port Hedland’s geographical position means we face a number of cyclonic weather events and fires throughout the year, with SES and bush fire service (BFS) volunteers bravely stepping up to make sure our community is ready and kept safe.

“I’d like to thank the Department of Fire and Emergency Services for this Award, which recognises the Town of Port Hedland’s support of State Emergency Service and Bush Fire Service volunteers.

“In addition to supporting Town employed volunteers, the Town remains committed to supporting disaster supply requirements, assisting emergency responders and providing community updates during emergencies.

“I’d like to congratulate all the award recipients across Western Australia, and look forward to the Town continuing to support the life changing work of SES and BFS volunteers.
