‘Those who adapt survive’*

Speaking at last year’s ABC Friends’ annual dinner, Ita Buttrose, AC OBE and Chair of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, described the challenges facing the national broadcaster as ‘incredibly daunting, and perhaps good reason to think about marching backwards… but I’m not one for retreating’.

Expected to do ‘more with less’, Ita said she “believes the future for the ABC is bright, but we shouldn’t be blinded by lights in the rear-view mirror. We will need to be a different ABC in the future than we were in the past.”

Changes to the Australian public service (APS) don’t just stop with the national broadcaster – the public service has begun a human resources (HR) professional stream strategy, which includes options in relation to certification, with Jacqui Curtis being appointed as First Head of Profession in the APS in October.

Curtis said in a speech to public servants, “[The strategy] is designed to bring together, invest in and build an expert HR workforce that is valued for its professional expertise and ability to deliver outstanding people outcomes.”

You can catch Ita Buttrose and Jacqui Curtis as they address public servants at the Public Sector Conference during AHRI’s National Convention and
Exhibition 2020.

The Conference will bring together some of the foremost HR minds and leaders in the public sector, with Ita making a keynote speech on the day.

You can find out more about the conference at ahri.com.au/tomorrow.
