North Sydney Council, New South Wales, recognised local female artists in August 2020 putting their work on show in the Council chambers.
Stirring and reflective, ‘Women in the Collection’ is an exhibition of works by nine female artists who have contributed to Council’s arts and cultural programs in significant ways.
Seven works were on display in the inTransit Space with Denese Oates’ sculpture on permanent display outside Chambers and the work of the late Jessica Birk on permanent display in the corridor leading to the Customer Services Centre.
The selection of works showcased a range of media such as sculpture, photography and painting by established and distinguished local artists as well as emerging artists, some of whom were identified through their inclusion in the prestigious biennial North Sydney Art Prize.
Mayor, Jilly Gibson said ‘Women in the Collection’ was an important exhibition to hold in Council Chambers.
“I am proud to display this collection of works by our female artists who have made a contribution to our cultural life in recent years.
“Just as in other career sectors, women have had to work hard to be recognised and valued in the art world.
“This is a small but important expression of our gratitude towards the women who are enriching our lives with their creativity.”
The inTransit Art Space is a permanent fixture in North Sydney Council Chambers and hosts an annual program of exhibitions featuring work by local artists and art groups. The exhibition space is open to the public Monday to Friday.
