Taking art to the people

The Huon Valley Council, Tasmania, has officially launched ARTBOX, a new mobile exhibition space which will travel across townships, showcasing the outstanding creativity and skills of local artists and makers.

Council’s Arts and Culture Strategy identified a need to connect people with creative products, services and experiences, and to build and support a strong creative sector in the region.

By providing a professional exhibition space, ARTBOX will help support established and emerging artists and art makers, to build their profile and evolve their practice.

ARTBOX will provide opportunities for regional and remote communities in the Huon Valley to experience and be part of local arts and culture.

Mayor, Bec Enders, said, “The Huon Valley Arts and Culture Committee identified a pop-up exhibition space as a creative way of profiling local art and connecting our communities with the arts.

“Council would like to thank committee member Henrietta Manning and the ARTBOX working group who further developed this concept.”

Mayor Enders said the ARTBOX, would support projects that engage closely with the region’s more isolated communities.

“We are welcoming proposals from artists, designers, curators, and community groups to feature artworks of all kinds, including visual arts, sculpture, craft, design, digital media, performance and installations.

“Preference will be given to artists, makers and producers whose art practice is based in the Huon Valley.

The project received support from the Tasmanian Community Fund.

Royal Wolf, who manufactured ARTBOX, passionately embraced the project delivering an inspiring product, the mayor said.

“We would also like to thank Bendigo Bank for their recent support to cover the transport costs of ARTBOX around the Huon Valley.”
