Victorian container deposit scheme design announced

Victorian councils and communities can celebrate a big win today with the announcement of the final design for Victoria’s container deposit scheme, said the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV).

The MAV congratulated the Victorian Government on choosing a scheme design that prioritises accessibility, simplicity and recycling outcomes.

MAV President, Cr David Clark, said he was thrilled that the Victoria Government had listened to strong community feedback about the need for a collection network that was easy to access, easy to use and that maximised the recycling of containers.

“We understand community members will be able to return cans, bottles and cartons at various locations including shopping centres, drive through collection depots, mobile drop off points for events and community festivals.

“We are also confident that community and sporting groups and charities will have plenty of opportunities to participate in and raise funds from the scheme.”

The MAV has been a strong advocate for reform and investment in Victoria’s recycling system, with the introduction of a CDS one of the five key actions called for from the State Government as part of our Rescue our Recycling Action Plan.

Container deposit schemes are celebrated around the world for their demonstrated success in increasing recovery of beverage containers, reducing litter, and delivering a range of social, economic and environmental benefits.

The number one factor in the success of any CDS is ease of access to collection points.

Cr Clark added that there are still a range of important details about the scheme that remain unclear including which types of beverage containers will be eligible for a refund.
