Road safety for local government fleet operators*

Fleet management organisations (FMOs) can help local government agencies and councils create a fleet policy that covers various safety aspects to ensure that vehicles are maintained to high safety standards and drivers are well trained.

In Australia, research shows two-thirds of work fatalities involve vehicles1, so it is essential your organisation has an appropriate fleet policy with a strong focus on safety to ensure it does all that is reasonably practical to manage the risks associated with the use of vehicles.

WH&S aspects like maintenance, safety recalls and accident management must be considered, and your fleet management provider can make recommendations around how to address driver licencing, infringement management and driver training.

Additionally, SG Fleet’s Inspect365 was developed to help customers adhere to Chain of Responsibility regulations. It is an entirely digital tool, providing a paperless trail, which not only allows users to manage their safety inspections, but also permits the reporting of progress on identified action items. An operator or workshop manager using Inspect365 is able to log the defect from the moment it is recognised. Should a driver notice an issue with a vehicle, they can immediately pull over and make an entry into the system.
