Importance of successful contract management for local government*

Improving contract management as a core discipline across councils is an expectation by auditors, a  desire  for all vendors, and a significant value-multiplier for  your investment in procurement resources who  manage your third-party spend profile.

For several years, Auditor General offices across Australia have highlighted the need for councils to focus on improved contract management practices and procedures. Countless IBAC, ICAC and CCC corruption enquiries point to the absence of good procurement and contract management fundamentals and controls.

Recently, there has been a significant spike in councils across the spectrum, prioritising projects to finally tackle this important problem.

In the past twelve months alone, City of Newcastle, Central Coast Council,
Manningham City Council, City of Stonnington, City of Whittlesea, Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, Queanbeyan-Palerang Council and Northern Beaches Council have all undertaken projects for improved contract management, taking significant capability steps in the four pillars of the contract management discipline: contract financial management, contract risk management, contract compliance management, and contract performance management.
