WA regional telecommunications inquiry welcomed

The long-awaited in inquiry into regional telecommunications in Western Australia has been announced according to WALGA president Karen Chappel and CEO Nick Sloan.

“We have received advice that the Legislative Council Standing Committee on Public Administration has resolved to undertake an Inquiry into regional telecommunications in Western Australia,” Cr Chappel said.

“The terms of reference are to inquire into and report on issues impacting regional telecommunications in Western Australia.

“While we acknowledge the deadline of 26 April 2024 for submissions is fast-approaching, we hope that regional Councils will see the merit in making a submission on this important issue. Feedback we have received from Member Councils suggests this is a significant issue.”

Mr Sloan said WALGA would provide a submission from a sector-wide perspective that will address issues that occur over significant parts of regional WA, such as resilience and capacity.

“Your Council submission can highlight issues specific to your area,” he said.

“Please note that this inquiry is parallel to, but not directly related to the Telecommunications Review currently being undertaken by the Commonwealth Government, Chaired by Hon. Alannah MacTiernan.
