Filling the gap

The Shire of Exmouth has opened a new recycling centre, unveiling a state-of-the-art facility to fill a key waste management gap in the regional community.

The opening of the Recycling Centre on 10 October 2025 was officiated by Shire President Matt Niikkula, and is a major achievement for the Shire.

Shire President Matt Niikkula said this much-anticipated development aligned with the Shire’s Strategic Community Plan 2023-2033 sustainability commitments.

“The opening of the Recycle Centre is a big win for the Exmouth community. As we work towards improving sustainability in a remote region, this facility will greatly reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill, and contribute to the delivery of Shire’s Strategic Community Plan 2023-2033.”

The Recycling Centre accepts cardboard, e-waste, milk bottles, polystyrene and steel cans, with material capacity expected to increase in the future.

The Centre is free to access six days a week, ensuring greater sustainability practices for the community in the unique coastal location of Exmouth, encompassing the Cape Range National Park and Ningaloo Reef World Heritage listed sites. By reducing the volume of waste sent to landfill, the Shire hopes to lower the community’s carbon footprint and ensure environmental protection for the future

The Recycling Centre located in the centre of the Exmouth township, is a symbol of sustainability itself.

The facility has been innovatively developed from the former power station, re-purposing a building that was no longer in use to power the sustainable future of Exmouth.

This project was made possible with funding support from both the Western Australian and Commonwealth governments, through the Recycling Modernisation Fund.
