Melton greeting its visitors

The official opening of Melton Shire’s Visitor Information Centre took place in early October. The Centre provides tourist information for Melton, the Macedon Ranges, Spa Country and surrounding regions.

Melton is ideally located as the gateway to these areas on the Western Highway 30 kilometres from Melbourne.

“The Melton Visitor Information Centre will provide a focal point within Melton’s busy shopping and business district, increasing the vibrancy of the precinct for visitors and tourists,” said Melton Shire Council’s General Manager, Neville Smith.

The Information Centre, which occupies part of the Courthouse building, has been operating since July and staffed seven days a week, mainly by volunteers. After negotiations with the Department of Justice and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Melton Shire Council won the right to manage the Melton Courthouse as a historic building, and put it to good use.

With tourism developing in Melton Shire and surrounding districts, Council believes this is an appropriate time for the opening of a Visitor Information Centre in Melton Township.

The Centre’s services and facilities had reached a standard to allow the use of the well known ‘i’ logo on signs to signify tourist information is available. This was achieved through the Better Business Tourism Accreditation Program.
