Taking Flinders to the world

An initiative of the Flinders Island Tourism Association, www.flindersislandonline.com.au is showcasing Flinders Island and the Furneaux Region to the world via the world wide web. Initially designed as a tourism website, Flinders Island Online has been broadened to promote other local business ventures.

It features numerous tourist operators and business enterprises. There is a detailed section on Flinders Island and the Furneaux region, covering location, flora and fauna, climate and geology, population and industry.

The site tells you how to get to the region, accommodation available, activities on Flinders, shopping on offer, how to get around once you are here and current holiday specials. People can make bookings and payment of various services they require while on holiday at Flinders Island.

It provides updates and information of upcoming and current events on Flinders Island. This is also part of the extension to assist economic development whereby business news, such as workshops and the like, is included. A detailed map of Flinders Island is displayed on the site, which shows the major points of interest and holiday information.

Having gone live in early February 2002, the website received 32,000 hits in its first month. Flinders Island Online is the result of a grant of $35,000 from the Federal Government’s Regional Online Tourism Program, $5,000 from Tourism Tasmania and $30,000 in kind from Council.
