Tax Essentials for Local Government *

The Tax Essentials For Local Government (TELG) product is designed to provide all staff in Local Government with the tools they need to understand GST and how it applies to all transactions that Councils encounter. Unlike any other GST service the TELG focuses on industry specific issues.

Fees and charges including those that are taxable and those that are exempted are covered in extensive lists with explanatory notes. Separate lists are included for New South Wales and Victorian Councils. Other States’ exempt fees and charges will appear during 2003. Included is an in depth analysis of grants and appropriations received from Commonwealth, New South Wales and Victorian Government departments. They are in table form and show the current GST status of the grants received according to the departments.

Property is probably the biggest emerging problem area for Councils. TELG covers all aspects of property including developers’ in kind and cash contributions. Early in 2003 there will be a comprehensive chapter on FBT as it applies to typical Local Government benefits provided.

TELG is written by the GST team at Gadens Accounting, headed up by Pat McCarthy. The team has been involved in providing GST consulting and training services to Local Government since early 1999. More than 150 full day training courses have been conducted by the firm. For further information contact Pat McCarthy from Gadens Accounting, telephone (02) 9931 4818, email pmccarthy@nsw.gadens.com.au or visit the web site at www.gadens.com.au
