Brisbane City Council is hosting one of the founders of modern peace studies, Professor Johan Galtung, at the 2003 Asia Pacific Cities Summit.Professor Galtung, from Norway, will speak on his ideas for peace in the current international political climate. He is among nine local and international speakers to confirm their attendance at the Summit, ensuring a global perspective on the future of our cities.
The 2003 Summit, an initiative of Brisbane City Council in partnership with the Queensland State Government, will be held in Brisbane from 13 to 16 April. Representatives from over 70 cities across the Asia Pacific region are expected to attend.
The theme of the 2003 Summit is ‘Emerging Futures of the City’, with the focus being on transforming urban sprawl, greening our cities, creating healthy cities, global/local governance and alternative futures.
Australian social commentator, Richard Neville, will be the Master of Ceremonies. Mayor of San Francisco, Willie L Brown, will deliver the international keynote address to open the 2003 Summit. He is well known for his tireless work on behalf of minority groups, and in particular his policies regarding homelessness.
International futurists, Dr Sohail Inayatullah and Ivana Milojevic, will present papers on alternative futures for our cities; and Indigenous solicitor and adviser to the Cape York Land Council, Noel Pearson, will speak on healthy cities, with specific reference to our Indigenous population. United States based strategic planning consultant, Steven Ames, will participate in the urban sprawl debate, while Malaysian ecological architect, Ken Yeang, and Vice President of BP United Kingdom, Greg Coleman, will speak on greening our cities.
