‘Skate’

Balranald Shire Council recently hosted ‘Skate’, a play presented by the Australian Theatre for Young People through South West Arts.

“Organisers of the play were delighted with the result,” said Balranald Mayor, Councillor Alan Purtill. “The attendance of over 200 people was outstanding, and I understand this was more than double the number at the Skate performance in Hay the night before.”

The play was very entertaining and as the name suggests, skateboarding was an integral part of the performance. Skate deals with typical small town issues including that life isn’t always fair.

“The young performers showed that you must rise above the things weighing you down if you want to succeed,” Councillor Purtill said. “The skating was especially enjoyable for the younger audience and the performance by the talented performers from Australian Theatre for Young People was inspiring. There were many serious scenes where the audience could feel the tension and some very funny scenes that generated a good amount of laughter. With such a good result we will be encouraging South West Arts to bring more performances to Balranald in the future.”

Council’s newly appointed Economic Development Manager, Hank van Apeldoorn, said that the play was a great success and the money raised will help establish a regular film night for young people in Balranald.

“As recently elected Chairperson of South West Arts, I recognise the importance of such a theatre performance touring program for places like Balranald,” Hank van Apeldoorn said. “With that in mind, I will be supporting Councillor Purtill’s efforts to encourage more South West Arts activities in the Shire.”
