‘On your Bike’

The City of Whittlesea has issued a cycling challenge to other Melbourne Councils, encouraging them to participate in the 210 km Around the Bay in a Day bike ride on Sunday 19 October. Staff have formed a 12 person cycling team for the Smith Family ride, which benefits the Learning for Life program to help disadvantaged students stay at school.

Whittlesea team member, Bruce Manison, said Council’s fundraising goal was to beat last year’s total of $2,500.

“It is an excellent opportunity to capture the enthusiasm of Local Government and direct it to the education of disadvantaged kids,” Bruce Manison said. “While some Local Government teams have more people than Whittlesea, there is a great amount of generosity among my colleagues.”

Organised by Bicycle Victoria, the ride starts at dawn in Melbourne, with entrants pedalling around Port Phillip Bay to Sorrento or Queenscliff, then returning by ferry to the city. Last year’s ride raised $250,000, with the highest fundraising team awarded the perpetual Smith Family Trophy.
