The City of Ballarat in Victoria has initiated a new mobile library service, making it easier for residents in outlying areas to access the range of programs and resources provided by the central Ballarat, Wendouree and Sebastopol libraries.
The mobile library van, which set up at the Buninyong Maternal and Child Health Centre for its inaugural visit, carries an extensive collection of books, magazines, DVDs, e-audio and e-books.
The van is kitted out with eight unique shelving units that are easily wheeled out of the van and into any site. Each shelving unit is capable of holding approximately 250 items.
City of Ballarat Portfolio Councillor for People and Communities, Craig Fletcher is excited that Council’s library staff can now create a ‘pop-up’ library in any community facility across Ballarat.
“The new mobile service is a welcome addition that helps us deliver first class library services to more of the Ballarat community,” Mr Fletcher said.
“The new van is much smaller than what was being used before, which means the level of services and number of sites can increase dramatically.
“The Buninyong community is the first to experience this wonderful service and soon the Mobile Library will be on the road regularly visiting more residents,” he said.
