Aussie Sport

AUSSIE SPORT is one part of Active Australia aimed at achieving quality junior sport and the development of young people through sport. Councils have an important role in assisting local sporting clubs, schools and community groups to develop active young Australians.

Local Councils are often approached by schools and clubs who are looking for ways to get young people involved in sport. Rather than reinvent the wheel, AUSSIE SPORT has produced a range of products, programs and services to develop and improve junior sport. Some of the areas in which AUSSIE SPORT has developed programs include the following.

Early Childhood

The Early Childhood and Resources programs give those working with children some ideas and strategies on practical games to develop confidence and the basic motor skills used in many sports. These programs include Sportstart, Playshops and Sport It.

Sport Everyone’s Game

These resources help make sport available to all young people. Disability, gender, race or geographical isolation are no longer viewed as barriers to full participation in sport. The programs and resources available are Willing and Able, Active Girls, Distance Education Skills Pack, and Indigenous Sport.

Youth Leadership

Some valuable programs have been designed to develop leadership skills in young people. The programs to consider are Sportsfun, Challenge, Achievement Pathways in Sport (CAPS), AUSSIE SPORT Leaders, and Sport Education and Physical Education Program (SEPEP).

Sport Counselling

These resources are designed to help students get involved in a sport which suits their interests and abilities. The programs include Sport Search and Careers in Sport.

Modified Sports

Modified sports features playing conditions, equipment and rules especially adapted to suit younger children. Other valuable resources in the junior sport area include The Codes of Behaviour, National Junior Sport Policy, Safety Guidelines for Children in Sport and Recreation and Coaching Children.

These resources are available from your local State/Territory Department of Sport and Recreation and the Australian Sports Commission Publications Division on (02) 6214 1915 or email pubs@ausport.gov.au.
