Private enterprise and local government collaborate to promote sustainable design in the City of Canning.
The City of Canning is a large metropolitan Council located just 15 minutes from the Perth CBD. The land is located in the suburb of Bentley, which is largely a residential area in close proximity to one of Perth’s premium universities, Curtin University.
The local government area encompasses the suburbs of Welshpool, St James, Bentley, Queens Park, East Cannington, Cannington Wilson, Ferndale, Lynwood, Shelley, Rossmoyne, Riverton, Willetton, Parkwood, Leeming and Canning Vale. With a multicultural population of 100,000 people, providing over 40,000 jobs and with a GRP of over $10.08 billion, the City of Canning is a diverse and dynamic community full of growth and opportunity.
Several years ago the City closed an old aquatic centre and has been working with the WA State Government to develop a master plan for the redevelopment of the site.
The project, entitled the Bentley Hub, is an exciting redevelopment for the Perth community and the region. It will include over 400 residential apartments with purpose built Student Accommodation, a 2000m2 state of the art Community Learning Centre (a contemporary library facility), approximately 4,000m2 of retail/commercial area and a new community park.
CEO Lyn Russell said the development would be a boon for the area.
“This development will completely transform this area, with a strong focus on the community and in creating a vibrant space with a range of economic and social opportunities.
“The Hub Project is a great example of how Local Government can work with private enterprise and State Government to create exceptional outcomes for the community, both economically and socially.
“Council endorsed the agreement with Sunshine Developments at its October meeting and this means this long-awaited project
can begin.”

The Hub concept will feature some of the best practices in sustainable design, including water and energy efficient buildings that will utilise solar photovoltaic installations.
It will take some years to complete construction, with four building stages with Stage One starting in 2016. Stage One consists of a medium density residential building comprising of approximately 60 apartments.

major milestone.
