A State Government action plan seeking to stamp out alcohol and drug related violence has been welcomed by The Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ), which they say will allow communities a greater say in implementing localised solutions to local issues.
LGAQ President Margaret de Wit said the newly released draft plan would empower councils to implement local solutions through participation in new ‘Safe Night Precinct’ local boards.
“This approach reflects a commitment to further empowering local councils to create safe and supportive environments for their communities.
“Under the action plan councils will have greater say on applications for extended liquor trading hours and adult entertainment permits, a proposal which has been supported by local government and the LGAQ for some time.”
The ‘Safe Night Out Strategy’ will also see collaborative local boards take part in managing expanded numbers of Drink Safe Precincts, which will increase from three to fifteen locations across the State and be renamed Safe Night Precincts.
Cr de Wit said the designated precincts were a welcome addition to funds already spent by Queensland councils on community safety measures like CCTV.
“Councils already invest significantly in technology to ensure our streets are safe.
“The commitment of the State in further supporting and empowering local councils in this space deserves recognition and support.”
