Suiting up for a cause

Sydney marathon runner Mike Tozer broke the world record for running a half marathon in a business suit this weekend in Blacktown.

Mr Tozer was one of the 600 athletes, walkers, runners and teams who took part in the eleventh Westlink M7 Blacktown Running Festival, in Sydney’s west.

This was the second attempt by the UK-born runner, who improved his suited time by 30 seconds since coming within 27 seconds of breaking the record at the Sydney Half Marathon.

Mr Tozer ran the M7 Half-Marathon in 1hr, 18 minutes and 10 seconds, taking three seconds off the previous record.

He made the attempt to raise awareness of Fragile X syndrome, the most common genetic cause of autism. His son, Josiah, has Fragile X.

Blacktown Mayor Stephen Bali presented the award to Mr Tozer. The mayor said the event is important for the community.

“The Westlink M7 Cities Marathon is unique as it is the only marathon to be held on a route that is 100 percent traffic free.

“It means runners have a smooth running event without having to worry about curbs, gutters or traffic.”
