Since 2013 Maribyrnong City Council has partnered with the local Braybrook community in an effort to deliver meaningful change to the disadvantaged area.
Revitalising Braybrook is an innovative revitalisation project designed to improve the wellbeing of residents in the suburb west of Melbourne.
This initiative tackles issues of social and economic disadvantage, infrastructure demands, and the challenges of creating a thriving and vibrant community for everyone.
Over the last three years, Phase One of Revitalising Braybrook has seen more than 30 enthusiastic stakeholders come together to deliver 86 actions aimed at improving the wellbeing of local Braybrook residents, and addressing the long-term disadvantage experienced by the community.
Bolstered by Phase One’s strong partnerships, Council is moving ahead with Phase Two and to implement a new framework to facilitate continued success.
The new framework sets out five priority areas: Learning Braybrook; Thriving Braybrook; Vibrant Braybrook; Connected Braybrook; and Great Places and Spaces.
These priorities and next stage actions have been developed in consultation with residents, other levels of government, community organisations and local business.
Council’s single biggest project under the Revitalising Braybrook project is the $12.5 million Braybrook Community Hub, with $9 million of funding from Council and $3.5 million from the State Government.
The Hub includes a brand new library, a new community centre, an integrated early years centre, a new sports pavilion, men’s shed and community meeting rooms.
The Hub celebrated its first birthday in March this year and recently won the LGPro award for excellence in community assets and infrastructure initiative over $1.5 million.
At the heart of the project is the long-term and shared commitment to working with stakeholders and residents to create positive and meaningful change in the community of Braybrook.
Mayor of the City of Maribyrnong Cameron McDonald said cooperation across the community has made the initiative possible.
“Revitalising Braybrook demonstrates what is possible when stakeholders across all levels of the community work together towards a common goal.
“The Braybrook community is a resilient one and the suburb is evolving in front of our eyes and the work we are doing with our partners contributes greatly to building and strengthening Braybrook’s character and its strong sense of community.”
