Craigieburn Park for future generations*

A regional aquatic centre in Craigieburn has broken new ground in design with its iconic roof profile.

The distinctive design can be seen from every angle, as there is no back to the complex.

Designed by Peddle Thorp Architects, the building is part of an extensive park that will include a regional athletics track; a war memorial; event space and passive park areas; pathways and playspaces and accessible playground; along with car parking and landscaping.

Craigieburn Park is to be situated near the town’s central shopping centre, in a 12-hectare area.

Hume City Council is building the $48.5 million development to meet the needs of its rapidly growing community in Melbourne’s north.
Peddle Thorp has designed a complex that will serve the growing Craigieburn community for generations.

Design director Peter Brook said designing such a complex was an important one for the Craigieburn community.

“When we create such a complex, we are building part of people’s backyard, and we need to be sensitive to people’s real needs.”

The $48.5 million complex will host a range of programs and activities and cater for people of all ages and abilities, including:

  • a 50-metre pool
  • toddler and learn to swim pools
  • leisure and warm-water pools
  • program pool, spa, sauna and steam room
  • waterslides
  • gymnasium and group fitness rooms
  • cafes and reception areas

The adjacent park, designed jointly by landscape architects Aspect Studios, contains other exciting features. The Victorian Government had recently announced it would contribute $600,000 towards Hume City Council’s inclusive playspace.

Hume Mayor Helen Patsikatheodorou said this was a real win for Craigieburn, “and the generations of children who will love what is set to be called Livvi’s Place”.

More than four per cent of Hume residents aged younger than nine suffer from a disability and require assistance.

“We’re very grateful that Minister Natalie Hutchins has established a fund to support infrastructure in the expanding outer suburbs of Melbourne,” she said.

The northern elements of the park are expected to open in mid-2016, with the Craigieburn regional aquatic and leisure centre to open in 2017.
