Moonee Valley City Council-operated buildings have gone
carbon neutral.
With all 50 Council operated buildings now carbon neutral, the Victorian Council is on its way to achieving its target of net zero emissions across all Council operations and services by 2020.
The operations include the Civic Centre, Clocktower, transfer station, childcare centres, kindergartens and libraries.
This has been achieved through a committed program which includes the reduction of Council buildings’ greenhouse gas emissions via the installation of solar panels, draught proofing works, staff behaviour change and the purchase of carbon offsets.
Since 2007, Council has reduced its emissions by 48 percent or 7550 tonnes of greenhouse gases.
Moonee Valley Mayor, Andrea Surace, said that we can all play our part in being climate change leaders.
“Moonee Valley City Council has identified ways to improve our business, and together – whether you are an individual, an organisation or a business – we can collectively make a difference,” the Mayor said.
“I’m excited and proud of the work that we are doing to tackle climate change, and of the efforts and hard work put in by Council and staff to reach this goal.”
Council further pledged its support to address climate change this year by becoming a founding member of the TAKE2 program.
The program brings government, business and the community together to help contribute to keeping the global temperature rise to under two degrees, while also helping to reach the Victorian Government’s target of net zero greenhouse emissions by 2050.
“The TAKE2 program reminds us that we can all contribute to lessening the impact that we have on the environment” said Mayor Surace.
