Proactive risk management*

“Risk Management – the act of identifying possible risks, calculating how likely they are to happen and estimating what effects they might have, especially in the context of a company taking responsibility for the safety of its employees or members of the public.”

Councils become members of Dial Before You Dig to minimise risk and to protect assets including power (such as street lights), optic fibre, water, sewerage and road reserves, as well as preserving, protecting and maintaining park lands, street trees, shrines and cultural heritage sites accessible to the
community.

The benefits of a Dial Before You Dig membership can be significant for councils:

  • enforcement of permit processes – enables council to monitor and enforce any permit systems in place
  • protection of assets – having knowledge of excavation work around council assets offers the opportunity to provide plans and information to ensure assets are not damaged
  • assurance of proper reinstatement of council property – records are maintained of any historic project work; enabling councils to easily chase up any unsatisfactory reinstatement work of landscaping and/or footpaths and
  • knowledge of excavators – allows documentation of work being carried out within council boundaries; the who, what, when, where and why.

Any excavation project, irrespective of size, has the potential to damage assets; leading to service interruptions, delays, costly repairs to asset owners and in the worst-case scenario, injury or death to council employees or contract staff.

Dial Before You Dig membership minimises these risks to councils and the public. Safety is a fundamental aspect of any excavation project and so Dial Before You Dig should always be the first point of contact: The Essential First Step.

Dial Before You Dig is a not for profit organisation that delivers a vital national community service designed to assist in preventing damage and disruption to Australia’s vast infrastructure networks.
Our unique service is used by most of Australia’s major infrastructure asset owners, including various community organisations and Local Government, covering approximately 750,000km of underground assets nationally.

Our state offices are committed in ensuring that those who own and work around infrastructure assets are protected and informed.
