75th anniversary of NSW Library Act

Shoalhaven Libraries have joined facilities across the state in celebrating the 75th anniversary of free public libraries in New South Wales.

To mark the event, Nowra Library hosted the arrival of Biblio Turismo, a group of motorcycling librarians promoting the joy and value of libraries.

The celebrations were part of a statewide program of events led by the State Library of NSW to commemorate this historic milestone and to recognise the important role public libraries play in the community.

Shoalhaven Library Manager, Sarah Taylor said since the signing off of the NSW Library Act in 1939 the number of public libraries in New South Wales has grown from two, Broken Hill and Sydney, to over 360 that includes 3.2 million members with more than 35 million people visiting libraries each year.

“The 75th anniversary of free public libraries in New South Wales represents a significant milestone not only for the library sector but for the millions of library members and users throughout the state.

“Shoalhaven City Council adopted the NSW Library Act in 1964 with the first library branch opening in 1967.

“Today the Shoalhaven Libraries welcome over 324,000 visitors through our  doors every year, while also taking part in a range of exciting programs from computer classes to book clubs and much more.”
