Locals embrace free Tai Chi

Active8 Free Fitness Tai Chi classes are worth getting out of bed for.

A happy group of North Queensland locals is loving Active8 Free Fitness Tai Chi classes at Rex Smeal Park, Douglas Shire.

Up to 50 participants have jumped out of bed each week to attend the Tuesday morning class at 9am since it was launched in October 2019.

The group celebrated their strong attendance and health outcomes with morning tea at the picturesque park last month.

Douglas Shire Council Sport and Recreation Officer, Renee Ker said she was keen to continue the popular program this year.

“It is looking really positive for future programs in the new year.”

The class is hitting its participation targets and organisers are currently preparing a grant application for future funding.

“Council has also committed some funding which will support our ability to continue to run the programs.

“It is nice to see such an incredible range of participants from young to old and of all abilities.

“The connection within this group is evident and I welcome everyone to be part of it, come on down and try a Tai Chi class.”

During COVID-19 restriction the classes went online with many participants who had never done Tai Chi, joining in for the first time through an online streaming service, which continued with some participants joining in the park-based class once classes resumed.
