Technology to improve parking management

Armidale Dumaresq Council (ADC) has implemented new parking monitoring technology in the Armidale CBD.

Electronic sensors, located beneath the surface of each parking bay, will now inform Council’s on-foot patrol whether vehicles have overstayed the free parking time allowed for that space. Labels are being affixed to the individual parking spaces where the electronic sensors are installed.

“The availability of free parking in the CBD will remain the same; the only change is that the surveillance systems are being modernised,” said Councillor Rob Richardson, who is on the working party that is overseeing the introduction of the technology.

“I would like to thank the community for their cooperation, as Council has already noted an improvement in parking compliance leading up to this change. This is achieving our aim of the increasing the availability of parking spaces for businesses and their customers in the CBD,” said Cr Richardson.

“With the line marking of parking bays, parking spaces along the roadside are also being used more efficiently,” said Cr Richardson.

“The recent work in improved CBD parking includes community consultation about free timed parking limits, resulting in some one hour zones being increased to two hours,” said the Mayor of ADC, Councillor Jim Maher.

“Once the testing of the new parking monitoring technology is complete, I anticipate improved productivity in our monitoring work, and fairer distribution of CBD parking, for the benefit of the retail community, shoppers and businesses in Armidale,” said Cr Maher.

The information derived from the sensors will enable Council to keep time limits under more effective review and to respond better to patterns of demand over time.
