WSN welcomes CPRS changes on landfill waste emissions

Leading Sydney recycler and waste management business, WSN Environmental Solutions, has welcomed the Federal Government’s changes to the way waste is treated in the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).

Under the amended CPRS design, waste operators will buy permits for emissions from waste disposed at landfills after the official start date of 1 July 2011, and not for emissions from legacy waste sent to landfill prior to the start of the scheme.

“This decision provides certainty for waste companies, their client councils whose residents’ waste is landfilled and ratepayers themselves,” said WSN CEO, Ken Kanofski.

“WSN has always strongly supported the inclusion of emissions from new waste in landfill under the CPRS. The waste sector can and should pull its weight in the fight against carbon pollution and these changes allow us to do that in a fair and reasonable way.”

Discussions between the Australian Landfill Owners Association and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Climate Change, Greg Combet, have proved very productive.

“Greg Combet listened to and understood our concerns, outlined clearly the Government’s policy agenda and has made changes that make the scheme good for the environment and good for business,” Ken Kanofski said.

He also said the Australian Landfill Owners Association played a crucial role in articulating the industry’s case to the Federal Government.
