On World Environment Day, Moreland City Council officers rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty for a great cause – adding a splash of green to a local park.
Council officers were given the opportunity to leave their desks and get out in the fresh – if brisk – air for a planting day at Gavin Park in Pascoe Vale, an ecologically significant area along Westbreen Creek.
Around 1000 trees, shrubs and ground cover plants were used to revegetate the 0.2 hectare area, with 300 planted by staff on the day.
The site was chosen for its importance as it is one of the few habitats of an endangered amphibian species known as the Growling Grass Frog. Revegetation will help improve water quality and the general area for the frog and other native fauna.
Council officers also had the opportunity to watch a pollutant trap removed and cleaned. Items fished from the trap in the past have included wheelie bins and car parts.
Council has hosted planting days throughout the Our Moreland Looking Good campaign, with a good community turnout.
“Planting days are an ideal family outing for community minded people,” the campaign’s Project Officer John McCunnie said. “The kids can get their hands in the dirt and it’s great spending quality time together outdoors.
“A free barbecue lunch at the end is a great way to thank residents for a job well done.”
