Communicators battle to reclaim local grunt*

Increasingly, people are seeking certainty in a world brimming over with uncertainty. Research following the Global Financial Crisis shows Australians, like many of their first world counterparts, want to be sure the choices they make of where to live, the work they seek, the investments they make, will help their families and secure them in work and strong communities.

Local Government Public Relations Association (LGPRA) President, Peter Fitz, said that people are increasingly looking to their governments to lead them through the plethora of decisions and offer them choice based on ‘looking after my family and my future’.

“There are growing expectations of and dependence on government to ‘fix things’,” Peter Fitz said. “People want more and more from their governments and they want it now.

“And Local Government is on the front line as the closest and most tangible form of government, and expected to be there for them, especially in times of change.”

He said the LGPRA is running its 2010 Local Government Public Relations Association conference in Sydney in March, with the topic for the conference being ‘Public Relations at the Crossroads – The Game has New Rules’.

The LGPRA conference will feature speakers presenting new research and communication strategies for government communicators to use in addressing a range of topics.

Guest speakers include:

  • David Chalke, Quantum Research – ‘Only change is
    certain’
  • strategist Laurel Papworth on social media and
    networking
  • Chris Galloway from Swinburne University Media on
    reputation management
  • Simon Craig, editor of Leader Newspapers, on how to
    work with local media
  • David Pidgeon, of Pidgeon Design, on how to evolve a ‘hot’ new brand
  • Peter Brown, Moreland City Council CEO, on lessons from
the Victorian bushfires, and many others.

The 2010 LGPRA conference will be held on
10–12 March and is the only conference of its kind in Australia, specifically organised by public sector public relations and communication professionals for themselves.

The preliminary conference brochure and registration forms can be downloaded at website www.lgpra.com.au

Registrations close on 24 February, with Early Bird Registration prior to 31 January.
