Graffiti vandals sent to court*

Two surprised graffiti vandals are facing charges in a South Australian court after being apprehended while spraying tags onto a Salisbury City Council property.

Their spraycans were replaced by handcuffs as they were taken into custody one night in late November.

The male vandals, aged 17 and 18 years, were detected by an electronic nose device – the graffit-e-nose™ – which recognised paint fumes and sent a silent alarm message to authorities. Police responded in time to catch them red handed.

Salisbury City Council’s Senior Security Officer, Danny Driscoll, said Council will be seeking costs from the vandals for cleaning the site.

In another recent case in Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, the graffit-e-nose™ successfully sent an 18 year old to the New South Wales court, where the case was proved.

A spokesperson for the local police said, “it is a valuable result for local policing, and it sends a message to vandals that there is a real risk of being caught.”

CEO of E-Nose Pty Ltd, Graham Bell, said the graffit-e-nose™ is a world first for Australia.

It has an effective range of over 50 metres, is invisible to the vandal, works indoors and outdoors and provides protection where none previously existed.

“It is a significant contribution to reducing the outrageous costs of graffiti vandalism,” he said.

The graffit-e-nose™ is now available through distributors across Australia.

It can be purchased outright or rented.
