Truckies ignore curfew

Maribyrnong City Council recently passed a resolution calling on the Victorian Government to increase enforcement of truck curfews in the City and to reconsider the truck action plan to remove trucks from residential streets.

“We’re asking the State Government to give our residents a fair go,” said City of Maribyrnong Mayor, Councillor Catherine Cumming.

“The truck curfews are in place but the latest count shows an average of 680 trucks on the roads during the curfew times each night, disturbing the sleep of our residents and leading to potential health problems.

“We’re asking the State Government to enforce the existing curfews and let our residents get some sleep,” said Cr Cumming.

“Most truck drivers do the right thing, but the trucks that break the curfew cause problems for our residents.

“We also want the State Government to take another look at the ‘Truck Action Plan’,” said Cr Cumming. “While curfews help alleviate the truck problem we need a long-term solution.

“Truck traffic through our City will quadruple over the next 25 years and action is needed now to cope with the spiralling numbers of trucks using our streets to get to and from the Port of Melbourne.”

“The Truck Action Plan is the best way to divert trucks from residential streets and allow the port to grow without disturbing residents,” said Cr Cumming.
