Grant for young artists

The Dogwood Crossing cultural centre in Miles has been awarded $14,465 in Artslink Queensland’s Regional Arts Fund Community Projects Program, to provide training and professional development for the region’s up-and-coming young visual artists.

The grant will enable emerging artists to take part in the Western Downs Youth Arts Development Week to be held at Dogwood Crossing in Miles from April
10th to 14th this year.

The five-day training program, which will be jointly hosted by Dogwood Crossing and Flying Arts Alliance, is an intensive creative and professional skills development program focused on training young artists in a mix of artistic styles.

Spokesperson for Western Downs Regional Council’s Cultural Development and Community Services, Councillor Carolyn Tillman, said the young artists would receive high quality training from professional practicing artists in a range of artistic mediums that would otherwise not be available in the region.

“Participants will receive expert tuition and guidance, get to mix and interact with professional artists and likeminded peers, and gain a better understanding of further education and career opportunities that exist for artists,” she said.

“It is hoped the project will develop into an annual event on the calendar that will attract young artists from across the region and beyond, and make Miles the ‘go-to’ place for young artist development in Queensland.”
