Kempsey Shire Council’s Water Treatment Plant at South West Rocks has recently been prepared and coated with Thermoshield by Climate Change Australia –Thermal Coatings. The Thermoshield product was developed from NASA space technology to help protect space shuttles from intense heat as they make their re-entry to Earth.
After its successful application to various council buildings in Victoria, this insulation coating was the ideal solution at Kempsey’s Water Treatment Plant.
Like many council depots and workshops that have metal roofs, staff at the plant often had to deal with extremely high temperatures in their workplace.
Working under the instruction of Council’s Water Technical Officer Todd Graham the treatment plant, which comprises a large metal roofed plant and equipment building, now provides a considerably cooler work environment thanks to its Thermoshield coating.
“There has been a drop of at least ten to fifteen degrees measured in comparable positions in the working environment since the installation of Thermoshield,” said Todd Graham. “Before Thermoshield even if the outside temperature was only 25 degrees, inside the building it could get as high as 40 degrees. Following the treatment last November our inside temperature has not gone above 28 degrees.”
He said that there has also been a dramatic drop in humidity, which is to be expected when temperatures drop in a process plant handling water.
“As we store various chemicals such as chlorine, high humidity also increases chemical odours,” Todd said. “Since the coating has been applied humidity is virtually zero and the odours have disappeared.
“We are now looking to use the coating at our other treatment plants and on our water reservoirs for both cooling and to protect their roofs.”
The Climate Change Australia –Thermal Coatings team travelled from Melbourne and stayed locally while carrying out the project at South West Rocks.
