The City of Casey has welcomed the announcement of $650,000 in funding from the Victorian Government to boost Council’s development of a new sporting facility at Carlisle Park in Cranbourne.
The $3.7 million project includes the construction of a synthetic football and cricket oval, two netball courts, cricket practice nets, a pavilion and car parking.
The Victorian Minister for Sport and Recreation, Hugh Delahunty MP and State Member for Mordialloc District, Lorraine Wreford MLA joined the City of Casey Mayor, Councillor Amanda Stapledon for the funding announcement on the 14th March.
At the event, Cr Stapledon said, “This significant contribution will go towards the first-ever synthetic playing surface for AFL and cricket in Casey and the second in Victoria. Until now, synthetic playing surfaces were only used for bowls, hockey, tennis and athletics in Casey.
“Introducing a synthetic surface for AFL will provide many benefits to our local teams and players, including improved safety, more playing time before maintenance is required and a beautiful green surface all year round.
“Carlisle Park will be home to the Lyndhurst Cricket Club, Youth Girls football, South East Juniors umpires and representative team squads, and Carlisle Park Primary School will also make use of the facility.”
The State Government’s announcement was accompanied by a $100,000 in principle commitment from AFL Victoria, adding to Council’s $3.22 million investment in the project.
“I would like to thank the Victorian Government and AFL Victoria for their contribution to the project,” said Cr Stapledon.
“Council provides a variety of first-class sport, leisure, aquatic, health and fitness facilities that enable all members of the community to get active, learn new skills or just have fun.
“This new facility is another example of Council’s continued commitment to the development of infrastructure to enable our communities to participate in physical activity as close to home as possible,” concluded Cr Stapledon.
