Symposium on the economic impact of natural disasters

The Australian Agricultural and Resource Economics Society (AARES) symposium on the Economic Dimension of Floods and Natural Disasters is a great opportunity to learn more about the impacts of the recent flooding in Queensland and of cyclone Yasi.

Speakers from AARES, CSIRO Sustainable EcoÃ¥systems, Queensland Government and academics from Australian universities will discuss the implications for the Australian economy of such disasters, and explore options about how the community’s response to such disasters should be organised.

The Chair of the Queensland Reconstruction Authority, Major General Mick Slater will officially open the symposium. His discussion of the State’s reconstruction efforts will then be followed by presentations from academics and other business professionals.

Some of the presentations being discussed include, but are not limited to, the Government’s strategy for handling natural disasters, accounting for natural disasters, issues associated with insurance, managing risk and disaster mitigation, and adaption strategies for primary industries when extreme weather events occur.

The symposium is being held in conjunction with the 9th Biennial Western Economics Association International (WEAI) Pacific Rim Conference. This Conference is being hosted by QUT’s School of Economics and Finance.

All members of the public are welcome to attend the symposium. It will commence at 9 am at QUT’s Gardens Point campus, Z Block, Level 4. The cost, which includes morning tea and lunch, is $70.

Further information, including the program and how to register for the symposium is available at www.bus.qut.edu.au/seminars
