Local Governments among the big winners in 2011 Australian Business Awards

Logan City Council in South East Queensland and Western Australia’s Mindarie Regional Council have been named among the country’s most progressive organisations in the 2011 Australian Business Awards.

In the product award categories, Mindarie Regional Council earned Best Educational Product for its tours program, which is designed to introduce school and community groups to waste reduction and environmental management facilities.

Western Australia’s largest waste management authority Mindarie Regional Council handles and disposes of some 1200 tonnes of waste each day through the state of the art Tamala Park Landfill. Its vision is to reduce the impact of waste on the environment to benefit region.

Mindarie Regional Councils comprises the Cities of Waneneroo, Stirling, Perth and Joondalup, and the Towns of Cambridge, Vincent and Victoria Park.

Providing community services and facilities to a population of over 280,000 residents, Logan City’s Chief Executive Officer Chris Rose said this national award recognises and honours organisations that demonstrate the core values of business excellence.

Chris Rose said Council was judged against a range of criteria including: organisational culture; leadership and strategy; information analysis and knowledge management; customer relationship management; human resource management; and performance results, achievements and industry contribution.

This year marks the sixth year the awards have been staged, with Logan City Council winning the keenly contested Service Excellence award in the Local Government industry category.

“This award is fantastic acknowledgment of how our organisation is pursuing its mission of delivering excellent Local Government services and also our vision of being a progressive leader in the sector,” he said.

“We are delighted to be recognised in these prestigious awards which are judged by independent experts. Winners of the Australian Business Award are widely acknowledged as industry leaders and named as the elite of their industry and that is certainly something we take great pride in.

“Council and our wider community have experienced enormous change and obstacles in the past three years and our priority throughout this time has been on delivering excellent customer service. This award acknowledges that through the hard work and commitment of our dedicated staff we have achieved that.”

Mayor Pam Parker cited the commitment and efforts of Council’s staff in ensuring Logan remains a progressive city.

“When we experienced Local Government Boundary Reform in March 2008 no-one could have predicted the enormous challenges we would, and continue to face,” she said. “In spite of these enormous challenges, we have not only managed to deliver a city our community can be proud of, but a city that is nationally recognised as one that delivers service excellence, something our families, investors and businesses can take a great deal of assurance from.

“This has only been achieved through the hard work and belief of staff here in Council. Logan is a remarkable city with so much to offer and our staff are without doubt among the best in the country. I know we will continue to kick goals in all areas as we work towards creating an even better Logan.”

The most comprehensive awards program of its kind, the Australian Business Awards are open to all organisations across private, public and not for profit sectors and comprise an established series of business and product award categories.

A total of 103 recipients were honoured from the 928 organisations that participated in the 2011 Awards.
