Lake Macquarie’s online development applications become transparent

Lake Macquarie City Council, located 90 minutes north of Sydney, is committed to providing efficient and quality services to the community. It recognises the growing demand for internet services and convenient access to information. Council offers a range of online services that will expand and be enhanced over time. One of these is the ability for residents to track the progress of various applications and certificates online, with access to publicly available documentation. The system was introduced in late 2005.

Manager Development Assessment and Compliance, Peter Hodge, said the information provided represents key milestones in the determination process.

“The service is available for development applications, construction certificates, and complying development certificates,” he said. “At this stage, applications are lodged manually and then an image of that application is placed online via Council’s website. Every stage, including internal and external referrals and submissions from other community members, are then made transparent as they occur.”

Council processes an average of 3,500 development applications per year. Peter Hodge said allowing people to visualise the application approval process has reduced incoming inquires dramatically.

“Access to view the process and documentation of matters is now available 24/7,” he said. “This means people can visit in their own time, including after hours.”

Limited information is also available for applications submitted prior to 15 March 2004 and dating back to 1982.
