Online pooch pound helps dogs find their way home

With over 4,500 dogs registered in Western Australia’s City of Albany, and an average of three dogs bought into the pound each day, Council has developed an online Pooch Pound, with photographs and details of all dogs currently held in the City’s pound.

Council’s Ranger Administration Assistant, Caroline Pugh, said prior to the online pound, Council kept a manual list of dogs and people in the City looking to adopt a dog.

“Each time a dog came up for adoption, I would have to go through my phone list and contact people to see if they were interested,” she said. “Now people can keep track of dogs coming in themselves and we don’t have to hassle them each time something comes up.”

Along with photographs and details, Council’s website also has a description of where and when the dogs were found. A three day period is available for owners to claim dogs that have no identification. After that, the City of Albany seeks to find suitable homes for them.

The Pooch Pound is now a part of Council’s website, but to keep it more up to date, a separate ranger’s website is being planned.

Caroline Pugh said that the new website will not only have pound details, but will include an after hours ranger number, a list of dog and non dog friendly beaches, camping areas, details of when fires are permitted and photographs of the rangers.

“The website will be fully maintained by the rangers and Council,” she said. “That way every morning when a ranger comes in, they can assess what new dogs have been bought in and download information to the site instantly.”
