To enhance lifelong learning in the community, the Hume Global Learning Village developed the Learning Together Strategy, which comprises 56 initiatives that all village partners have committed to delivering over the next five years.
One of these key initiatives has been the Inspiring Stories Project. Eleven individuals who have a connection with Hume and have inspired others, act as ambassadors for the program which encourages everyone in the community to aim for their goals and believe in themselves. Ambassadors include Eddie McGuire, Bruce Guthrie, Judge Irene Lawson and John Illhan. Hume Mayor, Councillor Adem Atmaca, praised the project and hailed it as “another first for Hume City Council and yet another example of how we are leading the way in building a better future for the Hume community. Our ambassadors provide invaluable mentoring to young people and set an example of what can be achieved by ordinary people doing extra ordinary things.”
In 2005, Hume City Council also established the Hume Inspiring Teachers’ Scholarships to recognise teachers, trainers, tutors and coaches in Hume. Three scholarships were awarded in the categories of primary, secondary and early years and will enable the recipients to strengthen their skills and abilities through enhanced learning about new models, ideas and approaches to learning. The knowledge gained will be shared with colleagues of the HGLV and the community.
Another initiative has been the Connecting Hume PC Program. To greatly improve computer literacy skills within the Hume community, Council in partnership with Ford Australia, GreenPC and Rotary International provide refurbished computers to disadvantaged Hume families with school age children who have demonstrated a passion for learning. Vanessa Little, General Manager, Learning Community said Council’s Connecting Hume PC Program is an amazing initiative that is making a difference to lives of families across Hume City. “The program gives our City’s children and their families a chance to explore and enhance their knowledge and abilities.” Since October 2004, over 85 families have benefited from the program.
