Broadband connects Burnie

Burnie City Council in Tasmania has been awarded a commendation in the 2005 National Awards for Local Government for its new Regional Broadband Community Network. eBurnie Connect aims to strengthen the local economy by establishing advanced broadband telecommunications services.

The new network is a combination of wireless and fibre optic connections specifically for the central business area, but also reaching into residential areas.

One reason for the project was to connect Burnie with other Councils, and provide a low cost means of communication across the region. When complete in late November, the network will cover the entire north west coast of Tasmania.

The eBurnie Connect project was designed to provide alternate cost effective and competitive broadband services to the area as well as establish Council as a local entrepreneur. The new broadband network has also connected water treatment plants and facilities across the region for the Cradle Coast Water Authority.

Connections are already being used by major customers in the area. This includes the University of Tasmania, which is using the network to connect its different campuses and TAFE colleges. The project will promote business development in the region by providing a high speed internet connection to link businesses and community organisations.

The eBurnie Connect project is also expected to provide a more satisfying lifestyle for local residents, as well as providing lifelong learning opportunities and attracting new economy to the area.

For more information contact Andrew Beswick, Project Officer, Burnie City Council on (03) 6430 5735.
